El Cajon, CA- Junior Monique Gayton paced the offense and the defense with 24 assists and 19 digs as Hope International pulled away from San Diego Christian on Saturday night 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-18).  Junior Naomi Iosia recorded 14 kills.

The Royals (5-7, 2-6 GSAC) opened the match strong by taking several three point leads.  But the Hawks (8-9, 1-7 GSAC) fought back and tied the match at 10-10.  Then Kim McCalmont rattled off four straight service aces to give the Hawks a solid four point lead.

Senior Jocelyn Moya finally gave the Royals back the lead at 20-19 with a service ace of her own.

However, SDCC came right back to take a 24-23 lead. At that point, the Royals tightened their defense and forced the Hawks into three straight hitting errors to take the set.

Gayton (pictured #33) controlled the opening set with 8 assists and an even more so with 10 digs.  Iosia had 5 kills.

The second set started out going back and forth but a kill and two service aces on three consecutive plays by Iosia gave the Royals the lead at 5-3.  HIU never looked back closing out the set on a 20-10 run.

Junior Casey Issenmann hit 3 for 4 (.750) in the first two sets combined.  She finished her night with a .500 hitting night (3-6).  Senior Ashley Travis was 2 for 3 in the second set.  She eventually ended the match second on the Royals with 7 kills.

After a 2-2 tie to begin the third set, Iosia pounded out three straight kills to put the Royals up 5-2.  The Hawks tied the set at 11-11 but the Royals would not be denied.  Strong serving by Issenmann helped the Royals pull away for the win.

HIU would build as big as an eight point lead before closing out the match with a comfortable seven point lead.

Senior Christina Richards had a couple of kills in the final set to go along with a block.  She concluded the match with 6 kills and 4 blocks.
