Volleyball (W): COACHING STAFF

Head Coach Steve La Rusch

The 2010 season marks the second season with Head Coach Steve La Rusch leading the Hope International Women’s Volleyball program.

Last season, Coach La Rusch made the tough transition of taking over a college program during the season.  After the team started 2-5, La Rusch grabbed the reigns and guided them to a 5-20 record the rest of the way.  Though the record is not that impressive, the level of play from the Royals dramatically increased which in turn boosted the team spirit.

The 2010 team which lost just two players while adding three new players hopes to build on the improved team morale from 2009.

Prior to Hope, Coach La Rusch coached Men’s and Women’s Volleyball at Long Beach Polytechnic High School from 1990-2008.  LBPHS is one of the premier athletic departments in Southern California and volleyball is no exception as they continually win Moore League titles.

In the Fall of 2008, La Rusch decided to make the step up to the college ranks and accepted an assistant coaching position at Cerritos College.  The Falcons finished with a 9-14 record (6-8 in the South Coast Conference).

La Rusch continues to teach at LBPHS in the Physical Education and Health Sciences Department- where he has taught since 1989.

Along with teaching, education has been important to La Rusch himself as he has a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University and Bachelors Degree in Physical Education from California State University Long Beach.  He has also earned three Teaching Credentials- a Single Subject in Physical Education, a Designated Subject in Driver’s Education and Training, and a Special Subject dealing with Severely Handicapped.

La Rusch resides in Long Beach with his wife of 21 years, Nancy, and their two children- Sabrina (HIU volleyball player) and John ( volleyball player at Long Beach Poly).  The La Rusch family is active at Parkcrest Christian Church where Steve teaches the 4th and 5th Grade Sunday School class.
