3/2/10 - Royals win 50/50

By Tim Gooszen

Phoenix, AZ- Aside from possibly a trip to Nationals, Hope International concluded their final road trip of the season with a split on the day against the same two teams from yesterday.  The first match of the day saw the Royals face off with Grand Canyon again- different day, same result of a 3-1 Antelope win (22-30, 30-26, 30-28, 30-25).  The #2 Royals won the grudge match against #3 Clarke, IA, 3-0 (30-21, 30-17, 30-25).  Senior Cory Hindemit finished the day hitting .450 with 23 kills and just 5 errors on 40 attempts.

The first set of the Grand Canyon match went as good as the Royals could have hoped as they led wire to wire while outhitting the Antelopes .351 to .091.  In the second set, HIU was outhit .325 to .205.  The third was the set that went against all logic as the Royals outhit the Antelopes .400 to .262 yet lost.

Hindemit pounded out 12 kills on 21 attempts with just one measly error.  He also recorded 6 blocks including two solos.

Freshman Bernard Luna had a big match as well as he delivered 14 kills on 30 attempts to go along with 16 digs.

Junior Andrew Marques passed out 39 assists.

In an attempt to redeem themselves from yesterday’s loss as well as keep their national ranking ahead of the Crusaders, the Royals came out and laid down the gauntlet by outhitting them .317 to .136.  A total of 17 tie scores and 5 lead changes combined in the first and third sets were sandwiched around the second set that once again saw the Royals lead wire to wire.

Hindemit went for a team high 11 kills.

Senior Alex Figueiredo had 10 kills, 4 blocks, and 3 digs.

Junior Danilo Pereira paced the attack with 34 assists.

Senior Noah Casaquit had 21 digs on the day.

The Royals, whose record now stands at 6-8 on the year, will have over a week off before playing on back-to-back nights against Philadelphia Biblical College starting on Thursday, March 11, at 7:30 pm.
