2/18/10 - Royals Overwhelmed By Warriors
By Tim Gooszen
Honolulu, HI- Playing in front of nearly 2,600 people on Thursday night, the Royals struggled to overcome the spotlight and the Warriors as Hawai’i defeated Hope International 3-0 (30-13, 30-23, 30-21). Sophomore Kaimi Guerreiro, playing in his home state, had 11 kills while hitting .308 for the Royals.
The NCAA Division I Warriors (7-5) took the early lead in the first set and built a 12-8 lead. From there, the Royals (5-4) could not do much else right. The Warriors went on a 10-0 run on their way to closing out the first set on an 18-5 run. Seniors Alex Figueiredo and Cory Hindemit led the Royals with just two kills each as the Royals hit just .103 in the set.
Set number two was much more competitive for the Royals. Though they never lead in the set (or in the match for that matter), they were behind by just one on several occasions. The Royals actually had two more kills than the Warriors (17-15) in the set but 6 serving errors came back to haunt the Royals. Guerreiro’s three kills led a balance attack.
Like the first set, the third set belong all to the Warriors. They led from the opening serve and closed out the match by outhitting the Royals .484 to .103.
Figueiredo and Hindemit both finished with 7 kills for the Royals.
Defensively, Senior Noah Casaquit, playing in front of his family and friends as well, led the Royals with 7 digs.
Hope International and Hawai’i will do a redo of Thursday’s match on Friday night. First serve is scheduled for 9:00 pm (PST).>> Back to Men's Volleyball Home Page
