Fullerton, CA- In their second to last home match of the season, the Royals played their usual strong, consistent tennis versus Azusa Pacific. The Cougars showed why they are ranked No. 5 in the NAIA as they refused to yield to the Royals and eventually won 9-0.
Freshman Jerry Laureano , pictured, started out a bit slow against Danny Colten but picked up his game in the first set to come away with a game win. While Laureano would be unable to add any other wins to his record for the first set, he rallied in the second set to win four more games. Pushing hard to make the most of those wins, Laureano sough to force the match to a decisive third set. Colten was able to hold Laureano off just enough to take the set and match win 2-0 (6-1, 6-4).
Also on the singles court, Freshman Justin Sutherlin nabbed a game win of his own off Whitman Hough in the second set. Despite a valiant effort, Sutherlin would not be able to take down Hough. He would lose 2-0 (6-0, 6-1).
Earlier in the day, Hough and partner Ilja Ikonnikov faced off against Laureano and Freshman Greg Cobian. The pair of Royals earned one game win yet could not rack up any others. Laureano and Cobian were defeated 8-1.
