4/13/10 - Biola Pushes Back Royals

La Mirada, CA- In their second match up the season, GSAC rival Biola proved to be too much for the Royals. The effort and energy exerted on the Royals’ part was not enough to defeat the Eagles, who would win 9-0.  

Beginning on the doubles court, the Royals showed they would not go down without a fight. Freshmen Greg Cobian and Jerry Laureano took a game off Weston Leopold and Brent Worthington, but would end up losing 8-1. Cobian would face Leopold on the singles court later, yet again would have to settle for only one game win. Cobian would lose the singles match 2-0 (6-0, 6-1).

At the number two doubles position, Freshmen Justin Sutherlin and Christian Booher also managed a game win, but could not defeat opponents Dan Westman and David Mossman. Sutherlin and Booher lost the match 8-1.

Game play on the singles courts proved to be equally challenging for the Royals. Booher and Freshman Nathan Deghi both earned a game win against their respective opponents; however, neither was able to capitalize on that victory. Both lost their singles matches. Sutherlin found himself once again opposite Westman though this time Sutherlin forced his opponent to give up two games. While he would try for a set and match win, Sutherlin was unable to overcome Westman and would fall 2-0 (6-0, 6-2).

Like his teammates, Laureano found himself using all his energy and skill to keep up with Eagles. In his singles match against Mossman, Laureano racked up two games in the first set and tried to position himself to win the set. Mossman proved to be too tough, and would hold off Laureano to win the set. Laureano would add another game win to his record before the match was though, but it was not enough to beat Mossman. In the end, Laureano would lose 2-0 (6-2, 6-1).

As the Royals hold a 1-16, 0-11 GSAC record, the Eagles improve to 6-13, 2-11 GSAC. Returning to their home courts, the Royals will host Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Cal State Fullerton.
