3/18/10 - Full Team Effort Cannot Defeat Amherst

By Stephanie Coats

Fullerton, CA- Playing with a full squad again, the Royals looked for an edge against Amherst College (MA). Though they would come up empty and lose 9-0, the Royals are continuing to work hard and improve every match.

Sophomore Henry Valiente claimed three of the four game wins for HIU. Taking on Alex Gumport on the singles courts, Valiente kept the first set close by claiming three games. He continued to challenge Gumport throughout the first set and did his best to give himself the set win. However, Gumport was able to fight off Valiente in order to pick up the first, and later the second set, giving him the match win 2-0 (6-3, 6-1).

The Royals’ other game win came from Freshman Jerry Laureano, who faced off against Will Rives. In the first set, Laureano managed a game win, but bad luck hit before the second set would begin. In an effort to keep up with Rives, Laureano wound up injuring himself and was forced to retire the match, giving Rives the win.
