2/18/10 - A Little Fight From Royals Not Enough
By Stephanie Coats
Whittier, CA- Picking up a few games more than previous matches was not enough to help the Royals bring down the Poets of Whittier College. Freshman Gregory Cobian was one of three HIU players to earn a game win, but neither he nor his teammates could prevent the resulting 9-0 loss.
At the No. 1 singles position, Cobian took on Ted Wyatt. Getting a game off his opponent in the first set, Cobian pushed to take the set but could not stop Wyatt’s momentum. Cobian would lose the set 6-1 and then match 2-0 (6-1, 6-0).
Freshman Jerry Laureano continued to prove he is a competitor by stealing a game in each set from Ryan Johnson. Though he looked to capitalize on those won games, Laureano was overpowered by Johnson and lost the match 2-0 (6-1, 6-1).
Fellow Freshman Nathan Deghi earned a game win as well and fought to keep up with Jonathan Pollare. Despite a strong effort from Deghi, he would lose 2-0 (6-1, 6-0).
The Poets made a clean sweep of the remaining singles matches and all three doubles matches.
