4/24/10 - Royals Fall In Season Finale
By Tim Gooszen
San Marcos, CA- Saturday’s season finale found Hope International down at Cal State San Marcos and saw the #13 Cougars shutout the Royals 7-0 and 8-0. Senior Sheyna Alarcon made the most of her final collegiate game as she went 2-3 with a double in the second game.
Two batters into Game 1 Freshman Kayla Uphold drew a walk followed by Senior Victoria Castillo being hit by a pitch but the Royals were unable to score. They would not have another base runner until Senior Lindsay Robillard singled leading off the fifth inning. Two batters later, Freshman Leslie Coffee singled to right but Robillard was cut down at third trying to jump start the offense attempting to go first to third on the Coffee single. A single by Uphold in the sixth was the last base runner the Royals would produce in the game.
Meanwhile lack of base runners was not the problem for the Cougars as four of their first five hitters reached base safely. Uphold did a good job minimizing the damage to just one run in the first. The Cougars scored another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Uphold shutout San Marcos in the third and fourth including a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. But then the fifth rolled around.
Back to back doubles and back to back singles produced two more runs with another single and groundout driving home three more runs to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead.
Uphold went the distance but was charged with the loss.
In the second game, Alarcon led off the second inning with a single to left field and a walk by Sophomore Bree Briones moved Alarcon into scoring position but both runners were left stranded.
Alarcon put herself into scoring position with a double to left center in the fourth but once again the Royals came away empty.
The last chance for the Royals came in the form of a walk for Briones in the fifth- she moved up to second on a wild pitch. But two strikeouts and a groundout closed the door on the half inning.
While the Royals were trying to find their offense, the Cougars wasted little time finding the scoreboard as they opened the bottom of the first with a triple and a double. A few batters later, a single made the score 2-0. The Cougars batted around plus one in the fourth to put up a four spot on the board.
The game and the Royals season came to a sudden end in the sixth when Lauren Nelson homered down the right field and make the score 8-0 and put the mercy rule into affect.
Freshman Janelle Medor threw the first three and two thirds innings of work and was tagged with her first loss of the season. Sophomore Alexis Alonzo threw the final inning and two thirds.
With the losses, the Royals end their season with a 14-32 record. The Cougars improved to 35-13.
