4/13/10 - Medor Stands Not Enough
By Tim Gooszen
Irvine, CA- Freshman Janelle Medor did a little bit of everything on Tuesday- 3-5 at the plate, walked, scored two runs, drove in a run, and pitched. Unfortunately, Medor’s effort was nowhere near enough as the Royals fell to the #9 Concordia Eagles 14-3 in six innings and 10-2 in five innings.
In Game 1, Concordia opened the scoring with a three run homerun in the second. Hope International responded with a three spot of their own to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the third. For the Royals, they took advantage of the Eagles’ generosity of two errors and a walk with a Medor RBI groundout and an RBI single from Senior Lindsay Robillard.
But the Eagles covered their mistakes and then some as they scored two in third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and finally four more in the sixth. A grand slam homerun accounted for all four runs in the sixth while putting the mercy rule into affect as well.
For the Royals, they collected a base hit in each of the last three innings but could not connect for second hit to really put pressure on.
Freshman Kayla Uphold suffered through her worst outing of the season and fell to 8-15 on the year.
Medor started game two off with a single and would eventually reach base in all three plate appearances with a walk and another single.
Concordia wasted little time finding the scoreboard after a single, double, and two run homerun to quickly take a 3-0 lead. Three walks allowed by the Royals came back to bite them in the second as all three would score and give Concordia a comfortable 6-0 lead.
The Royals got a run back in the third when Senior Sheyna Alarcon delivered a single to left to drive home Junior Rachel Costa- who reached after being hit by a pitch.
After allowing four runs in the fourth, the Royals had to score two to keep the game alive. Medor’s second single of the game, a wild pitch, and an Eagle error allowed the Royals to score one but that is all they would get.
Sophomore Alexis Alonzo was charged with the loss (5-11) after throwing three innings. Medor pitched the final three outs.
The Royals fall to 14-26, 2-18 GSAC with the losses. The Eagles improve to 37-13, 12-6 GSAC with the wins.
On Saturday, the Royals will honor their two Seniors- Alarcon and Robillard- playing in their final home games. First pitch with Vanguard is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
