3/2/10 - Royals “Join the Club” Against Lancers
By Tim Gooszen
Fullerton, CA- Like just about everyone else who has met up with the NAIA’s #1 California Baptist this season, Hope International came up empty in the runs column on Tuesday afternoon as they fell 10-0 in 5 innings and 8-0. Junior Caitlin Angel was the most successful at reaching base as she singled and drew two walks.
Game one started out bad for the Royals (6-6, 0-2 GSAC) as the Lancers (19-0, 2-0 GSAC) put their first five runners on base before six of the first seven batters would eventually score.
Sophomore Alexis Alonzo settled down after the rocky first and found a bit of a groove. Though two runs scored in the third it was in large part due to a couple of defensive lapses. The fourth inning was Alonzo’s best inning as she gave up a leadoff single but would retire the next three batters.
Alonzo struck out four but also issued four walks as she suffered the loss.
The lone hit of the first game for the Royals came off the bat of Freshman Janelle Medor with two outs in the fifth- an out before the mercy rule kicked in.
Game two appeared to be much closer than the final score indicated. As oppose to the huge inning allowed in game one, the Lancers, with the exception of the sixth, were only able to build on the lead a little at a time.
Freshman Kayla Uphold allowed eight runs total but only three were earned as the defense committed four errors behind her. The loss dropped her to 5-2 on the year.
The Lancers were unable to record an out of Angel in the second game as her single and walks all came those seven innings.
On Thursday, the Royals will return to action as they travel to La Mirada to square off with Biola. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
