2/25/10 - Royals Knock Off Warriors and Raiders
By Tim Gooszen
Medford, OR- The Royals picked up two wins at the Southern Oregon Invitational on Thursday by knocking off William Jessup 2-0 and host Southern Oregon 9-4. Freshman Danielle Thomson was the offensive star in the first game with a triple and both runs scored. Sophomore Bree Briones was 2-4 with two runs scored in the game against Southern Oregon.
Thomson singled in the early going and then tripled in the 6th inning. Junior Caitlin Angel drove her in the first time and then Senior Sheyna Alarcon singled to bring Thomson home after her triple.
Freshman Kayla Uphold (4-0) earned her first collegiate shutout in the win.
The Royals improved to 4-2 after the first game while the Warriors fell to 4-5.
Complete stats are not available at this time for the first game.
The second game started off with Uphold drawing a walk. Four batters later, Senior Lindsay Robillard singled into center field to bring home Uphold and give the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Briones and Freshman Janelle Medor had back-to-back singles to open the second. Uphold later singled to drive in both runs.
The biggest scoring output came for the Royals in the fourth when they pushed across three runs. Oddly enough they only produced one hit in the inning but took advantage of the Raiders’ generous gifts of two walks and two errors.
Sophomore Alexis Alonzo was involved in the final three runs scored by the Royals. Medor was hit by a pitch, stole second, and then was promptly driven home on a single to left by Alonzo in the fifth. Alonzo, herself, was cut down trying stretch the single into a double just after Medor scored.
In the seventh with runners on second and third, Alonzo reached on an error that scored the two base runners.
Alonzo was solid in the circle to earn her first win of the season. In fact, the four runs she allowed in the seventh inning were all unearned after an error by the Royals kept the inning alive.
The Royals pushed their record to 5-2 with the win. The loss dropped the Raiders 1-7 on the year. Hope International will play just one game on Friday against Northwest Christian at 11:00 am.
