2/24/10 - Royals Win One

By Tim Gooszen

Redwood City, CA- A late minute venue change allowed for just one game to be played between Hope International and Menlo on Wednesday.  The Royals knocked off the Oaks 9-4 on the strength of a three run first inning highlighted by a two run inside the park homerun by Senior Lindsay Robillard.  The second game of the “doubleheader” will now be played on Friday, March 12 in Fullerton at 1:00 pm.

With two outs in the first inning, Junior Caitlin Angel ripped a double into left center field.  Senior Sheyna Alarcon followed with a run scoring single to right center.  Then Robillard (pictured) stepped in and drilled a ball into left field that allowed her to get on her horse and circle all 240 feet of the base paths without stopping.

In the second, the Royals (3-2) took advantage of two errors by the Oaks (1-6) to take a 4-0 lead on an RBI single to center by Freshman Kayla Uphold.

Speaking of Uphold, she cruised through the first seven Menlo batters from the circle before running a slight bump of allowing two runs (one unearned) in the third.

HIU responded with a run in the fourth and then earned a little breathing room with a three run fifth.  The Royals scored their three runs on three walks and two hits with an RBI single coming off the bat of Sophomore Alexis Alonzo.

Alonzo would drive in the final run of the game for the Royals with a bases loaded walk in the sixth.

Though she allowed two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, Uphold improved to a perfect 3-0 for the season with the win in the circle.

On Thursday, the Royals will open play in the Southern Oregon Invitational in Medford, OR.  They start off with William Jessup at 4:00 pm followed by a meeting with the host school Southern Oregon at 6:00 pm.
