3/16/10 - Joe Lurker Named Director of Soccer at Hope International

Fullerton, CA- Hope International University is pleased to announce Joe Lurker as the new Director of Soccer.  Coach Lurker, who has served as the head coach for the Hope International Men’s Soccer Team the last four years, now takes over the lead role for both teams.

Under Lurker’s coaching expertise, the men’s program has collected 26 wins in his four years- the most in a four year span since the Royals joined the GSAC in 1999.  Two seasons ago, the men qualified for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament.  Even with the national tournament invite, the crowning jewel in Coach Lurker’s cap came in his first year coaching when Hope International defeated the NAIA’s #2 Azusa Pacific University 1-0.

Coach Lurker’s teams have made the most of their seven GSAC wins and three GSAC ties in his four years as they have defeated or tied all but three schools in the conference.  The men’s side has also had an All-GSAC player, including the GSAC’s leading scorer Edgar Bran last season, in all four years of Lurker’s tenure.

Now Coach Lurker will continue to build more success at the helm of both teams.  Coach Lurker commented, “I am excited for the new challenge of working with both teams.  I cannot wait to see happens in the next few years.”

The Women’s Program he inherits from former Head Coach Aaron Siefker, who steps aside to focus solely on his role as Hope International’s Athletic Director, has established program highs over the course of the last three years.  In fact, the combined win total of the last three years (29) is one less win than the entire first eleven years of the program’s existence.

In 2007, the women qualified for the NCCAA National tournament.  The biggest win for the program came in 2008 when the Royals beat the NAIA’s #18 Point Loma Nazarene University 1-0 in San Diego.

Like the men, the women have capitalized on their 8 GSAC wins and three GSAC ties by defeating or tying all but three GSAC schools over the last three years.

Under Coach Lurker will be an Associate Head Coach for each team.  Coach Lurker is currently trying to finalize the right person for both teams.

Siefker stated, “Hope International’s Athletic Department will be strengthened by the change to a Director of Soccer and two Associate Head Coaches.  Joe has the skill set to succeed coaching men and women.”
