1/30/10- Royals Pester Sea Lions

Fullerton, CA- Whenever the #2 team in country comes to visit, you always have your hands full. Saturday was no different for Hope International facing off with Point Loma Nazarene. Though the Sea Lions actually built a lead as high as 24 and ultimately defeated the Royals 67-52, the Royals never folded up their tents or cashed the game in. Junior Champ Hood went to work and produced a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Sea Lions (20-1, 11-1 GSAC) shot 60.7% to take control of the first half with Colleen Planeta scoring 20 of their first half 42 points. Freshman Ambrosia Lagmay led the Royals with 8 points.

Hope International actually hit 40% of their shots in the opening half but did not have enough size to neutralize the height of the Sea Lions.

After the break, the Royals decided to basically go shot for shot with the Sea Lions as they both made 10 shots. The Royals actually made one more three pointer and free throw. Due to their efforts, the Royals outscored the Sea Lions in the second half 27-25.

Senior Sarah Nylander had a huge part of outscoring the Sea Lions in the second half as she knocked down 9 of her 10 points after the break- all from behind the three point line.

Hood pulled down 8 of her 12 rebounds and converted 5 of her 11 points after the intermission.

The Royals actually ended the game with a huge rebounding advantage of 45-33 over the Sea Lions with 20 of the rebounds coming on the offensive end. Thirty-two of HIU’s rebounds came after the break.

Come Tuesday, the Royals (7-14, 2-9 GSAC) will play host to Concordia. The women will open the doubleheader with the men at 5:30 pm.
