1/23/10- Four to One Wins

El Cajon, CA- San Diego Christian’s Torreya Edwards went off for 29 points but Hope International had four players in double figures led by 17 points from Senior Sarah Nylander as the Royals earned a 73-61 win on Saturday afternoon.  Senior Sara Lycans-Roy had a double-double (13 points and 14 rebounds) to help the Royals cause as well.

Nylander needed just 21 seconds into the game to hit her first of 3 three pointers on the night and give the Royals (7-12, 2-7 GSAC) a 3-0 lead.  One their first possession of the game, the Hawks (3-15, 0-9 GSAC) tied the score with a three of their own.

Lycans-Roy pulled down an offensive rebound and laid the ball back up and in to give the Royals back the lead at 5-3.

Three ties and three lead changes later, Sophomore Lindsay Salazar hit a layup with 11:48 left in the half to put the Royals back in front at 15-14.  As it turns out the Royals would not surrender the lead, even down to a tie, the rest of the game.

In the final minute of the half, the Royals built an 11 point lead (35-24) when Lindsay Salazar hit two free throws.

After the break, the Royals pushed the lead to 15 in just over a minute to seemingly put the game away.

But the Hawks slowly started to chip away at the lead.  In the fact, the next nine plus minutes saw the Hawks go on a 22-8 run to pull within one (48-47) at 9:29 left.  The Royals answered with an 11-2 run in two and a half minutes sparked by six points from Lycans-Roy and another three pointer from Nylander to put the game out of reach for the Hawks as the HIU lead would not sink below six the rest of the night.

Lindsay Salazar had 9 of her 13 points after the break.  Sophomore Kasey Philyaw dropped in 6 of her 10 points in the second half by hitting a three and knocking three of her four free throws.  For Lycans-Roy, she pulled down 9 of her 14 rebounds in the second twenty minutes of play.

The Royals travel to Biola in La Mirada on Tuesday to round out the first half of GSAC play.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
