1/12/10- Resilient Royals Win on Road
Riverside, CA- Playing on the road and having three players foul out was not enough to keep Hope International from pulling out a 64-61 win over California Baptist on Tuesday night. With the usual suspects in foul trouble, Sophomore Morgan Rentie scored 10 points while missing just one shot on the night. Senior Kendra James and Sophomore Lindsay Salazar both had 12 points.
A technical foul at the beginning of the game charged to the Royals (6-10, 1-5 GSAC) for starters not turned in on time opened the door for the Lancers (10-6, 3-3 GSAC) to take a 5-0 lead. As it turns out, five would be the largest lead enjoyed by either team all night long.
Four different Royals scored on their way to forcing a 9-9 tie with 12:45 to play in the opening half. That was the first of nine times that the game would be tied.
A jumper by James gave the Royals their first lead of the night with 7:14 to play in the first half. The lead change was the first of a total 11 yet to come.
The Royals could not stop Brenna Hahn who scored the final five points of the half to give the Lancers a 32-29 lead at the break. While Hahn finished the half with 10 points, Senior Sarah Nylander had a Royals’ high 7 points (including two three pointers).
Lindsay Salazar got the Royals off on the right foot to open the second half with a layup.
From the 16 minute mark all the way down to 1:30 left, the game featured four ties and four lead changes.
After being fouled while attempting a three pointer, Lindsay Salazar calmly sank all three free throws with 1:30 to play. The first one tied score at 56 while the second one gave the Royals a lead which they would never surrender.
Sophomore Kasey Philyaw sealed the win for the Royals as she hit her four free throws down the stretch. She also played a major part in dribbling through the Lancer defense to milk time off the clock.
In the end, the win for the Royals came down to two more made three pointers. Rentie (pictured) hit one in each half to help the Royals’ cause.
On Saturday, the Royals will attempt to slow the Mustangs of The Master’s College when they get together at 5:30 pm.>> Back to Women's Basketball Home Page
