1/19/10- Royals Johnsoned and Owened

Fullerton, CA- Twelve points apiece from Seniors Buai Tut and Marcellus Cullors were no match for Azusa Pacific’s Reggie Owens (15 points) and the two Johnsons going for 14 each as the Cougars defeated the Royals 75-54 on Tuesday night.

The first shot of the game was sign of things to come the rest of the night as Marshall Johnson buried a three pointer to give the Cougars (12-6, 5-3 GSAC) a quick 3-0 lead.

By the time, Owens subbed in the Cougars had built an 11-5 lead.  Junior Jack Appleby had accounted for four of the Royals’ five points on two fast break layups.  Tut then laid home two points to bring the Royals (4-13, 0-8 GSAC) to within four points.

Unfortunately, the Cougars responded with an 8-0 run to essentially take control of the game.  Owens made sure APU kept the lead as he bullied his way around the paint for eight first half points to go along with six rebounds.

Although, Tut answered with seven points and six rebounds for the Royals, he did not have enough supporting cast and the Cougars led 37-24 after a half of play.

After their visit to the locker room, Cullors and fellow Senior Marko Torovic dropped in 10 and 8 points respectively.  But Owens had almost an identical second half as the first and the two Johnsons contributed 17 second half points combined (9 for Marshall and 8 for Dominique) to keep the Cougars in control.

That said a three pointer by Tut at the 6:58 mark brought the Royals back to within a single digit deficit at 59-50.  However, the Cougars quickly put the game on ice with an 11-0 run in then next 2 minutes and 33 seconds.

Next up for the Royals is a trip to San Diego County on Saturday to go head-to-head with San Diego Christian.  Tip-off with the Hawks is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
