1/2/10- Sea Lions Lights Out First Half Stops Royals
San Diego, CA- Point Loma Nazarene hit 85.2% of their shots (23-27) from the field in the first half to take control of their Saturday night game against Hope International. The Royals won the second half but still fell 78-61. Senior Marcellus Cullors had 14 points to lead the Royals.
From the opening tip, the Sea Lions (4-8, 1-3 GSAC) started firing away as they hit their first shot. They missed their next shot but made their next six.
Freshman Kris Rosales hit his first shot and made two free throws for the Royals (4-8, 0-3 GSAC). Cullors added a jumper to bring the Royals to within one at 7-6.
The Royals brought the game back to within two on several occasions but the Sea Lions just kept finding easy looks at the baskets and pulled away by halftime. At the break PLNU lead 50-32.
Junior Rich Merical knocked down three of five shots and two free throws to have eight first half points. Rosales finished the half with 8 points as well.
Cullors tried to bring the Royals back after the break by knocking his first two shots and a free throw.
Senior Ryan Sewitsky caught fire and hit two three pointers and converted a three point play on a jumper and foul shot.
When all was said and done, the Royals actually won the second half 29-28. Unfortunately, the first half barrage from the Sea Lions was too much for the Royals to overcome.
On Tuesday, the Royals return to the Darling Pavilion for a 7:30 pm tip-off with Vanguard.
